Gold vermeil, pronounced "ver-may," is a high-quality type of gold plating which involves a thick layer of gold on top of .925 sterling silver. It meets US standards with a minimum of 2.5 microns of gold, making it both gorgeous and hypoallergenic. The thicker gold plating in vermeil ensures a longer-lasting piece of jewelry than a gold plated piece of jewelry. However, over time and with extensive use, the gold can wear off in high-contact areas.
