If you've ever wondered about the differences between gold plated, gold vermeil, gold filled, and solid gold jewelry, you're not alone. Many of our customers ask about these distinctions, so we've crafted a guide to help you navigate these options and find the perfect piece for you.
Most of the gold jewelry we sell is either gold filled or vermeil. We've recently added a few extra special pieces that are genuine 14k gold and we also have some high quality gold plated styles-- but the bulk of the jewelry in our gold collection tends to be 14k gold filled and 14k gold vermeil because in my opinion, these materials have the perfect balance of quality and durability- while still maintaining a reasonable price point.
Gold Plated Jewelry
What is Gold Plated Jewelry?
Gold plated jewelry is created by depositing a thin layer of gold onto a base metal such as brass or steel through an electrochemical process. We only offer gold plated jewelry that has been treated with an "e-Coating". This new technology allows the gold coating to be locked in to the surface of the metal and creates a durable finish that wears and lasts much longer than typical gold plating. Gold plated jewelry provides the look of gold at a more affordable price.
Benefits:
- Affordability: Gold plated jewelry offers an economical way to enjoy the beauty of gold.
- Fashion Flexibility: Ideal for trendy pieces and seasonal styles without a large investment.
Our Gold Leaf Jewelry Collection is crafted from gold plated brass and has been treated with an extra e-coating to improve the durability.
Gold Vermeil Jewelry
What is Gold Vermeil Jewelry?
Gold vermeil, pronounced "ver-may," is a high-quality type of gold plating which invovles a thick layer of gold on top of .925 sterling silver. It meets US standards with a minimum of 2.5 microns of gold, making it both goegeous and hypoallergenic. The thicker gold plating in vermeil ensures a longer-lasting piece of jewelry than a gold plated piece of jewelry. However, over time and with extensive use, the gold can wear off in high-contact areas.
All of our gold vermeil jewelry also features an e-coating which is a technology that electronically bonds the gold on top of the sterling silver, rendering it longer lasting and even more durable than traditional vermeil jewelry.
Benefits:
- Long-Lasting Shine: The thick layer of gold ensures durability and a lasting shine.
- Hypoallergenic: With a sterling silver base, gold vermeil is a great choice for those with sensitive skin.
- All Precious Metals: With 14k gold over .925 sterling silver, vermeil is just about as precious as you can get.
- Luxurious Feel: Offers the look and feel of solid gold at a fraction of the price.
Most of our special stud earrings are gold vermeil and feature a very thick layer of 14k gold over sterling silver. See all of our 14k Gold Vermeil Jewelry here.
Gold Filled Jewelry
What is Gold Filled Jewelry?
Gold filled jewelry is crafted by mechanically bonding a thick layer of gold to a base metal, typically brass, using heat and pressure. This results in a durable, high-quality piece that won't lose its golden hue over time.
Benefits:
- Exceptional Durability: The thick gold layer is resistant to tarnish and wear, making it perfect for everyday wear.
- Affordable Luxury: Provides the appearance of solid gold jewelry at a more accessible price.
- Safe for Sensitive Skin: The substantial gold layer acts as a protective barrier, minimizing the risk of allergic reactions.
Many of our permanent jewelry bracelet chains are 14k gold fill chain and all of the gold options in our studio's handmade necklaces, bracelets and earrings are created from 14k gold fill material.
What is better-- Vermeil or 14k Gold Fill?
Gold Vermeil vs. 14k Gold Fill
It depends...The thicker gold coating in vermeil ensures a longer-lasting piece of jewelry compared to standard gold plating. However, with frequent wear, the gold may fade in areas of high contact.
Gold-filled jewelry differs from vermeil in that it involves bonding a thick layer of gold to a base metal, ensuring it won't rub off over time. However, gold-filled materials are limited to wire or sheet forms, restricting certain designs. It is for this reason that some of our most special and fun designs are only available in gold vermeil. Many of our favorite post earrings and gold charms, like the Tiny Sparkle Earrings, the Scallop Shell Pearl Drop Earrings and our Teardrop Huggie Hoop Earrings, are crafted from gold vermeil. This helps us keep our jewelry collection available to all because we always offer the exact same styles in .925 Sterling Silver.
14K Gold Jewelry
What is 14k Gold Jewelry?
14 karat gold jewelry is made entirely of gold alloyed with other metals for durability. It is available in various karats, with 14k being a popular choice for its balance of purity and strength.
Benefits:
- Timeless Elegance: Solid gold retains its value and beauty over time, making it a true investment piece.
- Durability: Resistant to tarnish and wear, solid gold jewelry can last a lifetime with minimal care.
- Hypoallergenic: Ideal for those with sensitive skin, as it typically doesn't cause allergic reactions.
All of the gold options in our Precious Island Collection are 14k Gold. This is the finest metal we offer and a great choice if you want only the most special piece to commemorate a special milestone or occasion.
